We carry out residential structural survey and commercial survey in Bishops Stortford. Bishops Stortford is a town which is situated in Hertordshire.
Bishops Stortford is a busy and ancient market town located in east Hertfordshire but on the border with Essex . The area around Bishop's Stortford includes beautiful countryside and pretty villages.
Whilst it appeared in the Doomsday Book Bishops Stortford was not one of the fifty recognised market towns and one website interestingly says how the market was often the first stage in the development of a small village and grew having to be registered with the King and in turn resulted in it being taxed and something more akin to one percent of the traders profit as opposed to today. This also explains how there was a rota of markets and in the 1250's was interpreted as being about 7 miles away but by 1690 had shrunk to 3 miles.
During the Roman era Bishops Stortford was a small settlement on the Roman road of Stane Street running from St Albans to Colchester , but the town was deserted when the empire collapsed. However, the Saxons settled on the site which they called Esterteferd, which eventually became Stortford. The 'Bishop' part was tagged on in 1060 when William, Bishop of London, purchased the manor. Later the Normans constructed a wooden castle in the town and the mound still remains; the castle itself was in ruins by the Tudor era.
There are a number of good examples of 16th and 17th century buildings in the town along with a with fine 15th century church. We carry out building surveys on properties of this era, indeed historical properties are of a special interest of one of our surveyors. To see examples of properties from these eras you can go to our downloadable survey page.
Due to the river and the roads the town gradually developed and the town became a market town by the beginning of the 19th century and the town still holds two street markets a week on Saturdays and Thursdays. In 1842 the railroad had arrived and the town developed further.
Whatever the history we enjoy the market atmosphere that the town has and the feel of the town is very much made up by the different ages of properties and the not knowing what is just round the corner. Bridge Street is typical of the many different types of buildings that are present, Water Lane also gives a hint of what was there in the past. Also we are informed once had one of the many leather tanneries and is the origin of the surname Tanner and Skinner.
Through the centre of the town runs the River Stort, in this case the river is actually named after the town, which is unusual as towns are usually named after rivers.
Today Bishop's Stortford is considered to be a commuter town and the town centre has undergone many changes with a new town centre area and the building of new homes. More building is planned due to the close proximity of Stansted Airport .
We have surveyed a few places in Bishops Stortford over the years including The Red Cow Public House on Dunmow Rd.
