Information on Chesterfield

On the junction of the A61 and A610/A617 is the town of Chesterfield close to the M1, junction 29, to the east. The town has the canal at its heart where you can take boat trips to while away an hour or two to see Chesterfield from a different prospective and enjoy walks along the towpath called The Cuckoo Way.

There is the amazing Crooked Spire Church which is the Church of St Mary and All Saints in church Way which was constructed in the late 13 th century and is the biggest church in Derbyshire. The spire was an addition to the Church in the late 14 th century constructed of an oak frame clad with lead and can be seen from miles away and is a famous landmark.

During the evolution of the railways Chesterfield was an important part of the Derby to Leeds railway line and George Stephenson spent much time in the town and lived at Tapton House from 1832 until he died in 1848. There is a bronze statue of Stephenson at Chesterfield Railway Station by Stephen Hicklin which is a fitting tribute to the civil engineer and mechanical engineer who as the father of the railways.
