Dunstable is situated at the junction of the 4,000 year old Icknield way and the Roman Watling Street on the eastward tail spurs of the Chiltern Hills, which form steep chalk enscarpments.
Dunstable is an historic market town which was started in the 12th Century by Henry I and later it became a significant coaching centre with a few of the coaching inns still remaining in the town today. Dunstable was later noted for its straw plait and hat making industries. The town's importance waned in more recent years as the nearby town of Luton grew.
