We carry out residential structural surveys and commercial surveys in Hoddesdon. Hoddesdon is located in the Lea Valley and is a commuter town in the county of Hertfordshire . In 1253 Hoddesdon was granted the right to hold a weekly market and a yearly fare on the Feast of St Martin by Henry III; this drew more people to the area and the town began to grow and traders came to live in the town and built their large houses here, some of which are still present today, for example, Lowewood House, which is now used as the home of the local museum.

In the 1700s Hoddesdon was a major coaching town between London and Cambridge and had in excess of 35 coaches a day going through the town and around 30 inns for travellers to stop and rest at.

The famous highwayman, Dick Turpin, 'worked' on the Hoddesdon to Ware Road in the 1730s and could well have frequented one the Inns that still remain in the town today, such as The Bell, The Salisbury Arms, The Golden Lion, The White Swan and The Bell which were built in the 15th and 16th centuries.

During this time the area was involved in the brewing trade and Hoddesdon held a weekly hops market. In though the market was not needed for hops as the River Lea was used to transport them instead. Since these days a market has held every week on a Wednesday in the town, though not selling hops!, and this market was joined by one on a Friday too in the last century.

In the mid 1900s until the 1970s gravel extraction took place in the area which left behind manmade lakes and pits, which have been utilised for leisure activities for the community. There is some light industry in the area today, but Hoddesdon is considered to be a predominantly residential area.

There are lots of shops in Hoddesdon High Street, which is mainly a pedestrianised area and there is a shopping centre called the 'Tower Centre'.

We are Independent Chartered Surveyors and do not work for a mortgage company or estate agent. It is laughable to expect that a mortgage owned surveyor or an estate agent owned surveyor will give impartial advice. Call 0800 298 5424 for advice from an Independent Survey company.
