  • Milton Keynes was formally designated as a new town on 23 January 1967.
  • The Milton Keynes area incorporated the existing towns of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford along with another fifteen villages and farmland in between.
  • Milton Keynes took its name from the existing village of Milton Keynes , a few miles east of the planned city centre.
  • About 20 percent of the new city area is parkland, adding up to 4,500 acres of river valleys, woodlands, lakesides and parks.
  • Milton Keynes has at least 40 million trees.
  • Milton Keynes' cathedral is made of trees planted to resemble Norwich Cathedral. This outdoor cathedral can be found near Willen Lake and is a peaceful place to visit.
  • Milton Keynes is the fastest growing urban area in Europe.
  • The concrete cows are not actually made of concrete. They were assembled from bits and scraps, and skinned with fibre glass reinforced cement mixture. In 1979, one of the small cows was stolen, never to be seen again.

National Bowl  

The National Bowl has a 65,000 capacity laid out in the form of an amphitheatre. The National Bowl is one of the biggest open air concert venues in the UK .

Milton Keynes Theatre  

The Milton Keynes Theatre has seating for 1,400 people. The theatre has a high booking rate and claims to be Britain 's most popular theatre

Museums  

Milton Keynes has two museums. Bletchley Park wartime cryptography museum and Milton Keynes Museum of Industry and Rural Life, which follows the history of the Milton Keynes area, including North Buckinghamshire and South Northamptonshire , from 1800 to the present day.

Sporting Facilities  

Milton Keynes has professional teams in football (Milton Keynes Dons F.C.), ice hockey (Milton Keynes Lightning) and in basketball (Milton Keynes Lions). It is represented at amateur level in many sports, some at national level. Milton Keynes is also home to an indoor ski slope which was the first 'real' snow slope. There is also a high ropes course based at Willen Lake . There is an ice rink in Milton Keynes too called ‘Planet Ice'.

Shopping

As a key element of the " New City " vision, Milton Keynes has a purpose built centre, with a very large "covered high street" shopping centre.
