Shefford is a small Market Town located between Hitchin and Bedford. The River Flit and the River Hit run through the town. The Flit runs from Flitwick and joins the Ivel on the edge of Shefford. The Ivel eventually joins the Great Ouse just north of Sandy.
The earliest recorded mention of Shefford was in the 13th Century; however archaelogical finds show that the Romans were in Shefford in the 1st Century AD and there have also been finds of later Anglo Saxon pottery from around the 6th Century.
It is thought that in the 9th Century the shepherds found this point the easiest to cross the river with their flocks and the name Sheep Ford was born.
