Dominating the skyline of Sleaford across the flatness of the area is the 144 ft spire of the 12 th century St Deny's Church in the Market Place. The church has an altar rail which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren which previously was in Lincoln Cathedral but was given to St Deny's after the cathedral was refurbished. Sleaford once had a castle which was built in the early 1100's and was the residence of the Bishop of Lincoln between 1124 and 1139. Unfortunately the castle fell into disrepair in the 16 th century and very few stones remain today although it is said that some of the stones over the years have been used to build other buildings in the town.
