Information on Swanage
Just south of Christchurch is the pretty Victorian town of Swanage. Swanage Pier has had an interesting history, the original pier was built in 1859 at the south end of the beach, some of its remains can still be seen protruding from the sea. The existing pier was built in 1896 and is still standing in spite of the fact that the army blew up part of it during the Second World War as it was a potential invasion point. In 1994 it was taken over by Swanage Pier Trust who have restored it with the help of English Heritage and Lottery funding. The Swanage Railway operates steam trains from Swanage and Norden and you can even have the opportunity to drive your own steam train. South of Swanage is Durlston Country Park which comprises 260 areas of nature reserve which has many animal, bird and reptile species. The visitor centre has some interesting information on the area and its wildlife. The magnificent Durlston Castle was built in 1886 and is in use as a restaurant.
