Interesting Facts about Ware

 

  • Ware is thought to have been an inland port exporting goods and possibly slaves too, as a Roman slave shackle has been found near Ware Lock which is now in Ware Museum.
  • Using the New River, which is a manmade waterway, fresh water is supplied to London from Ware since 1613.
  • England 's first turnpike (toll) road ran from Wadesmill to Ware.
  • The town was once a centre of malting.
  • Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen at Ware in 1553.
  • Ware is twinned with Cormeilles-en-Parisis in France and Wulfrath in Germany.
  • Ware is famous for ‘the Great Bed of Ware', a huge bed built around 1590, which was used in a number of the inns in Ware. The bed is referred to by Shakespeare and now resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
  • Ware is also mentioned in the Canterbury Tales.
  • The word ‘Cave' appears on the town's coat of arms and is Latin for the word ‘beware'; this is a pun on the towns name.
  • Council offices occupy remains of Franciscan priory.

 

Places of Interest in and around Ware

Much Hadham

Much Hadham is a showpiece village which for centuries was the country seat of the Bishops of London. Their palace, near 12 th century church, is mainly Jacobean. The main street has many Elizabethan cottages and Regency houses.

St Mary's Parish Church

The town has a large 14 th century parish church of St. Mary which is known for its elaborate font with large carved stone figures.

The Priory

The council offices and a conference centre are located in the old priory which was thought to date from the 14 th century, but restoration work has shown that the building, which was actually a friary, dates from the thirteenth century.

Gazebos

Ware is known for its many 18th century riverside gazebos, some of which have been restored to their former glory.

Scott's Grotto

Scott's Grotto was built for John Scott who was an 18 th century poet. The grotto is the biggest grotto in the United Kingdom and can be found in between number 28 and 34 Scotts Road in Ware. The grotto is a number of connected chambers going 67 feet into a chalk hillside and the tunnels and chambers are decorated with various shells embedded into the walls along with flint stones and coloured glass. Scott inherited Amwell House and grounds in 1768 from his father and whilst he was rebuilding the house and designing the gardens he decided to build a grotto, which were rather fashionable in the 18 th century. The grotto was restored in 1990.

Ware Museum

Ware Museum has a timeline display of Ware's History from pre-history times to the Second World War. There is a World War II bunker with an area inside teaching about evacuees and the Blitz.

Lee Valley Park

Lee Valley Park runs for 26 miles from the East End of London to Ware in Hertfordshire. It includes the River Lee Country Park at Cheshunt where there are nature trails to follow and some of the pathways are for cyclists too. People can become involved in activities in different areas of this park, for example walking, fishing, bird watching, cycling and swimming.

Franciscan Friary

This Friary of the Franciscan Order was founded in 1338 by Thomas Wake, the Lord of the Manor of Ware. The religious foundation survived until the suppression of the monasteries by Henry VIII, and was then dissolved in 1538. Time passed and the building became run down and much was pulled down. The property was a private house for some time and was also a hospital in the First World War. What is left is now the Town Council building. The present ‘Priory', contains part of the Friary's south cloister range, which is an enclosed walkway and the guest hall. More recently renovations have found medieval detailing and have given evidence on the layout of the destroyed monastic buildings.

‘French and Jupps Limited, Malting Museum

French and Jupps is a family malting business which was in existence for over 300 years.


King's Meads

Kings Meads, often called ‘The Meads', is a large site which consists of grassland meadows next to the Lee Navigation. The area is set in the Lee Valley between Hertford and Ware.

Thundridgebury Manorial Site, Near Ware

Thundridgebury manorial site is at Thundridgebury, near Ware. This site includes a big dry D-shaped moated enclosure measuring around 195 meters x 200 meters, and includes the ruins of the 15th century church of St Mary and All Saints, and the remains of Thundridgebury House and its outbuildings, recorded in 1535. Another manor house may have been on the site before this one was built. You can see a number of brick foundations and a section of brick buttress.

Ware Festival

Ware hosts a festival called the ‘The Ware Festival' for two weeks every summer which ends with the ‘Rock at the Priory' which is a day of music held in the open air.
