Information on Whittlesey

Formerly known as Whittlesea, this is an old market town situated in the Fens. It is, however, mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Witesie.

It is located between March to the east and Peterborough to the west. The River Nene flows around its borders and Kings Dyke runs through it. Before the draining of the Fens Whittlesey was an island surrounded by marshes.

The town is marked by butter cross, a cross which dates back to 1680.

Every year in January locals host the Straw Bear Festival, a festival that dates back to the late 19 th Century, held on the first Tuesday after Twelfth Night (and the first after “Plough Monday”) where somebody used to dress as a “straw bear”. He was then led through the town entertaining folk as he went. The Festival fell into decline in the early 20 th Century, but was resurrected in 1980 and is now a very popular annual event. Festivities last through the week, (although the bear only parades on Saturday) until Sunday when the straw bear (costume) is burnt on a bonfire to make way for a new bear the following year.
