Close to the A6 near Matlock is the town of Wirksworth on the B5023 with its railway station in the east of the town and Anthony Gell School in the centre. Lead mining in the past was Wirksworth source of wealth particularly between 1600 and 1780 however by the end of the 19 th century this was in decline closing due to the extraction being deeper becoming uneconomic to mine.
